Overland Telegraph topic for historical gathering

Last Wednesday, the Tamworth Historical Society played host to Tamworth identity Rod Hobbs at their first General Meeting for the year.
Del Brooke, Publicity Officer for the society said during a trip to Australia’s centre, Mr Hobbs became involved in the history of The Building of the Overland Telegraph Line from Port Augusta to Darwin, and this amazing construction was the topic of his talk.
“Mr Hobbs painted a very interesting picture of the incredible building of the Overland Telegraph Line in the 1860-70s and the dreadful conditions under which it was eventually completed,” Ms Brooke said.
“The Australian Overseas Telegraph Line was a 3200km telegraph line that connected Darwin in the north to Port Augusta in South Australia. It enabled fast communication between Australia and the rest of the world when in 1872 it eventually joined the overseas cable link from Java at Darwin and in 1877 it joined up with new line in Western Australia. Probably the greatest engineering feat in Australian history to that date it was one of Australia’s amazing stories of determination, vision and hard work.”
