Prize pieces
Robert Baines is one of Australia’s most prominent and influential jewellers and goldsmiths with a career spanning more than 30 years.
His exceptional craft skills and extraordinary body of work are currently on show at Tamworth Regional Gallery. Baines will visit Tamworth as part of the Public Programs for Living Treasures: Masters of Australian Craft series: Robert Baines: Metal on Thursday, February23. Baines will walk through the exhibition and speak about his pieces giving a rare insight into his practice.
Baines has profoundly shaped Australian jewellery, object-making and international historical scholarship. With wry humour, his works challenge our conception of the world as much as they delight with their technical brilliance, often referencing the notions of the fake, the phony, the copy that have been part of jewellery making and collecting throughout the ages.
Baines creates jewellery and large, complex wire works often combining precious metals of gold and silver with plastic and powder coated elements. These works frequently reference archaeology and draw on abstract forms and ideas. His internationally recognised study of archaeological treasures in gold grounds his own craft practice, achieving a sense of continuity with his ancient colleagues and providing a platform to toy with the mythology of our own culture.
The talk will be on Thursday, February 23, at 6pm, all welcome and entry is free. Robert Baines: Metal will run until Saturday, March 24.
